Charles H. "Charlie" Robertson (April 12, 1934 – August 24, 2017) was an American politician affiliated with the Democratic Party who served as mayor of York, Pennsylvania from 1994 until January 2002. His tenure in municipal government and a high-profile legal case from events in 1969 made him a prominent and controversial figure in local history.

Political career

Robertson was elected mayor in the mid-1990s and led York's city government through the remainder of that decade and into the early 2000s. As mayor he dealt with routine municipal responsibilities—public safety, budgeting, and community programs—within a small post‑industrial city context. His administration formed part of York's civic leadership during a period of economic and social change.

1969 York race riots and criminal case

Events in July 1969—commonly referred to as the York race riots—left a lasting mark on the city and its residents. Decades later, in May 2001, Robertson was charged in connection with a murder that occurred during those disturbances. The accusation and subsequent prosecution drew national attention because it involved reopening a civil‑rights–era case nearly thirty years after the events.

The trial concluded with an acquittal in October 2002. Observers noted the case illustrated tensions between demands for accountability for historical crimes and the challenges inherent in prosecuting old cases: faded memories, lost evidence, and changed social contexts. The proceedings affected public perceptions of both Robertson and the broader process of addressing past racial violence.

Later life and legacy

After his acquittal Robertson remained a figure in York's public memory. He died of cancer on August 24, 2017, at age 83. Reactions to his life and career were mixed: some remembered his service as mayor, while others focused on the unresolved questions and community wounds stemming from the 1969 riots and their long aftermath.
