Göran Bror "Benny" Andersson (born 16 December 1946) is a Swedish musician, composer and record producer best known as a founding member and principal songwriter of the pop group ABBA. Over a career that spans popular hits, stage musicals and orchestral folk-pop projects, Andersson has been a central figure in Swedish and international music since the 1960s. His work ranges from keyboard performances and studio production to long-form composition for theatre and film.
Early career and rise to fame
Andersson began his professional career in the 1960s with the rock and pop band the Hep Stars, gaining attention as a keyboardist and songwriter. His partnership with lyricist and fellow musician Björn Ulvaeus developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, leading to the formation of ABBA in 1972. As the group’s arranger and keyboard player, Andersson co-wrote many of ABBA’s chart-topping songs, contributing to the band’s global success after their Eurovision win in 1974 with "Waterloo".
Major works and musical projects
After ABBA disbanded in 1982, Andersson turned increasingly to theatre and long-form composition. Notable projects include:
- Chess — a collaboration with Björn Ulvaeus and lyricist Tim Rice, combining pop and theatrical writing.
- Kristina från Duvemåla — a Swedish-language musical based on Vilhelm Moberg’s novels, noted for its dramatic scope and orchestration.
- Mamma Mia! — a stage musical built around ABBA songs; Andersson also served as an executive producer on the 2008 film adaptation.
He has also led the ensemble Benny Anderssons Orkester (BAO), which blends Swedish folk traditions with pop and classical influences.
Style, instruments and collaborators
Andersson is primarily a keyboardist and arranger, known for layered harmonies, strong melodic hooks and a polished studio sound. His long-term creative partnership with Björn Ulvaeus produced the melodies and structures for ABBA’s most enduring songs, while collaborations with lyricists and producers—such as Tim Rice and film/theatre producers—expanded his work into musical theatre and film production. Later activities and recognition
Beyond recordings and stage work, Andersson continued to contribute to high-profile events. In 2013 he collaborated with Ulvaeus and the DJ-producer Avicii on the anthem for the Eurovision Song Contest that year, first presented during the contest final in May. He remains active as a composer, performer and cultural figure in Sweden, and his compositions are frequently covered, adapted and performed worldwide.
