Børge Ring (17 February 1921 – 27 December 2018) was a Danish animator, director and screenwriter whose career in European animation stretched over many decades. He earned international recognition for short films that combined economical storytelling with detailed character work. Ring is best known for the short Anna & Bella and for Oh My Darling, both of which brought him major awards and helped to raise the profile of auteur-driven short animation in the late 20th century.
Career and creative approach
Ring worked in both commercial and artistic animation, applying skills from classical cel animation and modelled staging to create emotionally resonant shorts. His films are often described as subtle, character-focused and gently humorous, with a careful eye for timing and visual economy. Rather than relying on spectacle, Ring emphasized narrative clarity and expressive movement to convey mood and relationship dynamics.
Notable films and recognitions
- Oh My Darling (1978) — a short film that won recognition at the Cannes Film Festival; the film helped consolidate Ring's reputation in international festival circuits. See the festival entry at Cannes Film Festival.
- Anna & Bella (1984) — a short animation that won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film, bringing Ring wider public attention and celebrating his gift for concise, affecting storytelling.
Legacy and influence
Ring's work influenced a generation of European short filmmakers and animators who valued personal voice and narrative restraint. His films are cited as examples of how short animation can explore adult themes—memory, family ties and the passing of time—without resorting to sentimentality. Beyond festival prizes, his career demonstrated the creative possibilities of short-form animation as an art form as well as a commercial medium.
Although best known for a handful of internationally celebrated shorts, Ring's longevity in the field and his steady craftsmanship contributed to the development of animation in Northern Europe. He spent many years working in the Netherlands and remained a respected figure among colleagues and festival programmers.
Børge Ring died on 27 December 2018 in Ravenstein, Netherlands, at the age of 97. His films continue to be screened at retrospectives and studied for their precision of timing and humane themes.
