Bab Christensen (Barbra Karine Christensen, 8 January 1928 – 10 April 2017) was a Norwegian actress whose work spanned stage, television and a small number of films. Born in Kristiania (the name for Oslo until 1925), she emerged in the post‑war theatre scene and became associated with several of Norway's leading companies.
Career
Christensen made her professional stage debut in 1947 at the National Theatre in Oslo. Over the next two decades she held engagements at a succession of important Norwegian institutions, moving between repertory stages and the developing medium of televised drama. Her appointments included:
- Den Nationale Scene (Bergen) from 1949
- National Theatre (Nationaltheatret, Oslo) from 1952
- Trøndelag Teater (Trondheim) from 1963
- Fjernsynsteatret (the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation's television theatre)
- Det Norske Teatret (Oslo) from 1970
Throughout these engagements Christensen performed in a broad repertoire, including classical plays and contemporary works adapted for both stage and television. Her career reflects the typical path of a mid‑20th century Norwegian stage actress who balanced live repertory theatre with the new opportunities offered by televised drama.
Film and television
Although best known for theatre, Christensen appeared on screen as well. Her most widely cited film credit is the 1957 movie Stevnemøte med glemte år. More significantly, she took part in productions for Fjernsynsteatret, NRK's televised theatre unit, which brought stage drama into Norwegian homes and provided a visible platform for many stage actors of her generation.
Personal life and legacy
In 1957 Christensen married actor Lasse Kolstad; the marriage lasted until his death in 2012. Her long career in Norway's principal theatres and on television made her a familiar presence in the country's cultural life. She is remembered as a steady and versatile performer who worked across regional stages and national institutions.
Christensen died in Oslo on 10 April 2017 at the age of 89. For contemporary notices and remembrances, see available obituaries and archives here.
