Annalena Charlotte Alma Baerbock (born 15 December 1980) is a German politician and public figure affiliated with Alliance 90/The Greens. She has served in the Bundestag since 2013 and became Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs in December 2021. Baerbock rose rapidly within her party, serving as one of its national co-leaders from 2018 until 2022 and as the Greens' candidate for chancellor in the 2021 federal election.
Early life and education
Baerbock grew up in Germany and pursued higher education in political science and public international law. She also undertook postgraduate studies in London. Her academic background combined with early work in policy environments helped shape her focus on European cooperation, international law and environmental policy.
Political career
After entering the Bundestag in 2013, Baerbock took on roles within parliamentary groups and party structures at both state and federal levels. She became co-leader of Alliance 90/The Greens in 2018, a period during which the party broadened its appeal and prepared to compete as a potential governing force at the national level. In 2021 she was selected as the Greens' lead candidate for chancellor in the federal election, marking her emergence as a national figure beyond the party base.
Minister of Foreign Affairs
Following coalition negotiations after the 2021 election, Baerbock joined the federal cabinet as Foreign Minister in the government formed late that year. In that role she has emphasised a diplomacy that balances security concerns with human-rights advocacy, European solidarity and multilateral engagement. During crises affecting Europe and beyond she has spoken for coordinated sanctions and collective responses alongside partners.
Policy priorities
Baerbock's public positions centre on climate action, stronger European integration, human rights and the rule of law. She supports ambitious measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and has argued for integrating environmental objectives into broader foreign-policy decisions. She also promotes a foreign policy that foregrounds gender equality and democratic values while engaging with transatlantic and European partners on security and economic challenges.
Controversies and public scrutiny
Her rapid rise produced intense media attention and scrutiny. During the 2021 election campaign she faced criticism for inaccuracies in campaign materials and parts of a publication that lacked adequate sourcing; she acknowledged errors and sought to correct them. As a senior public figure she continues to be subject to close examination of her record and statements.
Significance
Baerbock represents a generation of Green politicians who have helped transition the party from an issue-focused movement to an actor in government. As a prominent woman in German politics, she has shaped public debates on how environmental priorities, human-rights commitments and security considerations should be balanced in contemporary foreign policy.
