Overview
Andrzej Wojciech Suski (born 24 December 1941 in Płock) is a retired Polish prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He was ordained a priest in 1965 and later served in the episcopacy, first as an auxiliary bishop and then as the diocesan bishop of Toruń. His career spans pastoral ministry, diocesan administration, and public representation of the Church in Poland.
Early life and priesthood
Born and raised in the city of Płock, Suski entered the seminary and was ordained to the priesthood in 1965. During his early years as a priest he carried out typical parish and diocesan duties: celebrating the sacraments, catechesis, and supporting parish life. These formative decades prepared him for later responsibilities within the Polish episcopate.
Episcopal ministry
In 1986 Suski was appointed an Auxiliary Bishop of Płock, a role he held until 1992. Auxiliary bishops assist the diocesan bishop in pastoral and administrative tasks and often supervise specific areas of diocesan life. In 1992, following a reorganization of ecclesiastical boundaries in Poland, he was named Bishop of Toruń, leading the diocese through its early years and development.
Roles and responsibilities
As a diocesan bishop Suski's duties included:
- overseeing clergy and parish structures,
- implementing pastoral initiatives and liturgical norms,
- representing the diocese in national and local Church bodies, and
- engaging with civic institutions on matters affecting the faithful.
These functions reflect the wider mission of bishops to teach, sanctify, and govern within their jurisdictions.
Retirement and legacy
Suski retired from active ministry in November 2017, in line with the customary practice under canon law that expects bishops to submit their resignation upon reaching the age threshold. In retirement he holds the title of bishop emeritus and remains a figure of experience for clergy and laity who recall his decades of service. For further basic references see general profiles of his offices: bishopric details and diocesan summaries available through ecclesiastical directories.
While not known for controversial public stances, his long service during a period of change in the Polish Church makes him a representative example of post‑war clergy who guided local communities through social and institutional transitions.
