Andris Bērziņš (born 10 December 1944) is a Latvian businessman and politician who served as President of Latvia from 2011 to 2015. He rose to prominence in the private sector during the country's transition to a market economy and later moved into national public life. He was elected by the Saeima on 2 June 2011 and completed a single four‑year term.

Early career and banking

Bērziņš built his reputation primarily in the banking sector. He was president of Unibanka from 1993 until 2004, a period that coincided with major economic and institutional changes in Latvia after the end of Soviet rule. His professional background emphasized corporate management, finance, and the modernization of banking services in a newly independent state.

Presidency (2011–2015)

As head of state, Bērziņš performed the largely ceremonial but constitutionally important duties of the Latvian presidency: representing the country abroad, signing laws, nominating candidates for prime minister and other offices, and exercising clemency powers. His election by the parliament reflected broad political agreement among deputies at the time. Observers noted his pragmatic, low‑profile approach to the office and his emphasis on stability and continuity.

During his term he engaged in state visits, hosted foreign dignitaries, and took part in public debates on economic and social matters. His experience in finance shaped his public statements on economic policy and Latvia's integration with European institutions. Bērziņš typically avoided partisan confrontation and sought to present the presidency as a unifying institution above day‑to‑day politics.

After leaving office in 2015 he has remained a recognised figure in Latvian public life, with commentary focusing on the intersection of business experience and public service in post‑Soviet democracies.
