Overview

Andrej Kiska (born 2 February 1963) is a Slovak entrepreneur and philanthropist who served as the President of Slovakia from 2014 to 2019. He entered the 2014 presidential race as an independent candidate and was inaugurated on 15 June 2014. Before public office he was best known for business activities and for establishing a prominent charitable initiative.

Business and philanthropy

Kiska built a career in the private sector before moving into public life. He has been described as an entrepreneur whose work included founding and managing commercial ventures. He became widely known for his charitable work, most notably founding the Dobrý Anjel (Good Angel) programme, which mobilized private donations to help families facing medical and financial hardship. He is often referred to as a philanthropist for these efforts.

Presidency (2014–2019)

Running as an independent, Kiska campaigned on themes of integrity, transparency and closer ties with European institutions. His presidency focused on symbolic and moral leadership: supporting civic initiatives, defending rule-of-law principles, and speaking against corruption. He occupied the office of President of Slovakia during a period of significant public debate about governance and accountability.

Notable initiatives and positions

  • Promotion of charity and volunteerism through public advocacy and foundation work.
  • Support for judicial independence and anti-corruption measures as matters of public priority.
  • Encouragement of civic engagement and transparency in political life.

Legacy and later activity

Kiska's presidency is often remembered for bringing a non-partisan, civic-minded voice to Slovakia's highest office and for raising the profile of charitable responses to social problems. After leaving the presidency he remained a visible public figure and continued to be associated with civic and political initiatives. His trajectory—from private entrepreneur to philanthropist to head of state—illustrates a recent trend in which business leaders move into public service with an emphasis on ethical governance and social responsibility.
