Aimee Lou Wood (born 3 February 1995) is an English actress who rose to wider attention through television and film work in the late 2010s and early 2020s. She is most widely recognised for portraying Aimee Gibbs on the popular series Sex Education, a show produced for Netflix. Her screen credits also include roles in the feature films The Electrical Life of Louis Wain (2021) and Living (2022).
Early life and training
Wood was born and brought up in Stockport, within Greater Manchester. From an early age she pursued performance training and went on to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), one of the United Kingdom's long-established drama schools. She completed her formal training there and began building a professional résumé in stage and screen work thereafter.
Career and notable roles
Her breakthrough came with the ensemble cast of Sex Education, in which her character developed from a supporting presence into a focus of several important storylines. Critics and audiences noted her ability to bring warmth and nuance to parts that balance vulnerability with resilience. After establishing herself on television, Wood took roles in period and contemporary drama films, working alongside established actors and expanding her range beyond comedy-drama television.
Acting approach and reception
Wood's performances are often described as naturalistic and emotionally attentive: she tends to favour subtle gestures and expressive clarity over broad mannerisms. This approach has led reviewers to single out her scenes for emotional honesty, helping the characters she plays feel lived-in and relatable. While relatively early in her career, she has drawn attention for consistent work across different formats.
Personal life and public profile
Outside of acting, Wood maintains a presence in interviews and public events typical for contemporary screen actors. She has spoken in public about the craft of acting and her pathway from regional training to national visibility. Between 2019 and 2020 she was in a relationship with fellow actor Connor Swindells, a co‑star from Sex Education.
