Overview

Biéville-Quétiéville is a former rural commune located in the historical region of Basse-Normandie (now part of the larger Normandy region), within the Calvados department in northwestern France. It ceased to exist as an independent municipality on 1 January 2017 when it joined other communes to form Belle Vie en Auge.

Geography and characteristics

The settlement exemplified the small, dispersed villages common in Normandy: low-density housing, farmland, and lanes lined by hedgerows. Local land use was predominantly agricultural, with mixed crops and pasture typical of the Calvados countryside. Built features usually include a parish church, a village hall, and traditional regional architecture such as stone or timber-framed houses.

History and administrative change

Like many French communes, Biéville-Quétiéville has medieval roots reflected in its settlement pattern and local institutions. In the 2010s, national and regional efforts to streamline local government encouraged voluntary mergers; as a result, on 1 January 2017 the commune was incorporated into the newly created commune of Belle Vie en Auge to pool services and resources with neighboring villages.

Local life and heritage

Daily life in such villages centered on agriculture, small-scale commerce and community events. Heritage elements often include a rural church, a war memorial, lanes and farmsteads, and the surrounding cultivated landscape valued for its scenic character. The area contributes to Normandy's wider cultural identity, known for dairy farming, apple orchards and cider production.
