The municipality has historically been shaped by its strategic location on the Scheldt. Fortifications and river defences were built to control navigation and protect Antwerp; vestiges of that military and maritime past remain visible in local forts and quays. A notable historic site is Cortewalle Castle, set in parkland and reflecting the area's feudal and mercantile heritage.

Economically, Beveren combines agriculture and light industry with logistics and port-related activities. Parts of its waterfront form extensions of the Port of Antwerp's operations, including container terminals and ship services. The town also supports local commerce, cultural events and amateur and professional sport — most famously football clubs that serve the wider Waasland area.

As a municipality in Flanders, Beveren is Dutch-speaking and governed by a municipal council and mayor. Its population has been in the tens of thousands; official counts around 2007 recorded approximately 45,771 inhabitants. Visitors often come for riverside walks, local heritage sites and to observe the interaction of historic villages with modern port infrastructure. For further administrative or visitor information see the municipal page and regional resources: local services and regional transport.
