Édouard Charles Philippe (born 28 November 1970) is a French politician and lawyer who served as Prime Minister of France from 15 May 2017 until his resignation on 3 July 2020.

Political affiliation and parliamentary service

Philippe began his national political career as a member of the centre-right Union for a Popular Movement, which later became The Republicans. He was elected to the National Assembly in 2012 representing the 7th constituency of Seine-Maritime.

Local government

At the local level, Philippe first became mayor of Le Havre in 2010 and also presided over the city's intercommunal authority. When he was appointed prime minister in 2017 he left his municipal functions, but after stepping down from the national government he returned to local politics and resumed the mayorship of Le Havre in July 2020.

Appointment and resignation as prime minister

On 15 May 2017 President Emmanuel Macron tapped Philippe to form a government. Philippe led the cabinet through several major domestic reforms and managed the administration for just over three years before handing in his resignation on 3 July 2020.

After the premiership

Following his return to municipal leadership, Philippe remained active in national politics. In 2021 he launched a new political initiative positioned on the centre-right. Throughout his career he has combined work in public office with a background in law.
