Overview

Zuoz is a compact mountain municipality in the Upper Engadin valley. Administratively it belongs to the district Maloja in the canton Graubünden, in eastern Switzerland. The canton is also known in the Romansh language as Grischun. Situated above the valley floor, Zuoz functions as a local centre for nearby alpine settlements and combines residential life with hospitality and cultural activities.

Architecture and village plan

The village retains a compact historic core characterised by traditional Engadine houses: deep-set windows, thick stone walls, painted sgraffito façades and covered arcades around a central square. Narrow streets, civic buildings and a prominent parish church reflect a street plan shaped in the medieval period. Conservation of façades and public spaces is an important local priority, and visitors often note the uniformity and craftsmanship of decorative details.

Language, culture and traditions

Romansh (primarily the Puter dialect) and German are commonly heard in Zuoz. Local customs include seasonal processions, carnival traditions and community festivals that preserve alpine and Romansh cultural expression. Traditional music, costume and crafts continue to be practised alongside contemporary cultural events.

History and development

Zuoz developed as a parish and market centre in the Middle Ages; its surviving towers, church and stone houses document long-term settlement and local governance. The village adapted to tourism and modern transport while maintaining much of its historic character. Efforts to manage visitor impact aim to balance accessibility with preservation of fabric and atmosphere.

Economy, tourism and education

Local livelihoods combine small-scale agriculture, hospitality, and services for year-round outdoor recreation. In winter the area attracts skiers and cross-country enthusiasts; in summer it is a base for hiking and alpine activities. Zuoz is also known for the Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz, an international private boarding school that contributes to the village’s educational profile and intercultural life.

Access and conservation

Zuoz is reachable by regional road and public transport links that connect the Upper Engadin settlements. Local authorities and preservation organisations work to protect the village’s built heritage and linguistic traditions while supporting sustainable tourism and community life.
