Zoospore: motile asexual spore of algae, fungi and related organisms

A zoospore is a flagellated, asexual spore produced by certain algae, fungi and water molds. It swims using one or more flagella, disperses in water, encysts on contact and germinates to continue the life cycle.

A spore called a zoospore is a motile, asexual propagule produced by some algae, fungi and fungus‑like protists. Unlike non-motile spores, zoospores bear one or more flagella that allow them to swim or glide in liquid environments. Characteristics and structure

Zoospores vary in size and in the number and type of flagella. Some groups, such as chytrid fungi, produce a single posterior flagellum and are classified with opisthokonts, while oomycetes and many heterokont algae have two different flagella — a tinsel-type and a whiplash-type — that differ in fine structure and function. Zoospores are typically naked (lacking a thick cell wall) so they can propel themselves, and they contain food reserves, a nucleus, and organelles needed for short-term survival and navigation.

Lifecycle, behavior and examples

Zoospores are formed inside sporangia or reproductive structures and are released into water. They exhibit behaviors such as chemotaxis or phototaxis that guide them toward suitable substrates or hosts. Upon encountering a surface, a zoospore often encysts — shedding or immobilizing its flagellum, forming a protective wall, and then germinating to form a new thallus, sporangium or infective structure.

  • Notable examples: plant pathogens in the genus Phytophthora use zoospores in infection cycles; chytrid fungi that have impacted amphibian populations release zoospores that infect skin.

Zoospores are ecologically important because they mediate rapid colonization and transmission in aquatic and moist terrestrial ecosystems. In agriculture and wildlife health they are significant when they serve as the dispersal stage of pathogenic species. Their sensitivity to environmental conditions — temperature, salinity, and flow — influences outbreak dynamics and spread.

Distinctions: zoospores differ from non-motile aplanospores, from gametes (which function in sexual reproduction), and from resting spores such as zygospores or oospores that are designed for long-term survival.
