Overview
Betty Mars (30 July 1944 – 20 February 1989) was a French performer who combined a recording career with roles in film and on stage. She worked mainly in popular music and appeared in several European motion pictures. Her public profile was strongest in the late 1960s and 1970s.
Musical career
Mars recorded pop and chanson-style material and toured in clubs and theatres. She is widely remembered for representing France at the 1972 Eurovision Song Contest, an appearance that brought her national attention and introduced her to a wider European audience.
Acting and screen work
Alongside singing, Mars took small parts in a number of films and television productions, often appearing in continental European projects rather than mainstream French studio pictures. For a brief overview of her screen credits see Filmography and for notes on her international appearances consult international sources.
Death and legacy
In February 1989 she suffered a fall from an apartment window and remained hospitalized for several weeks before dying on 20 February. Authorities later declared her death a suicide; contemporaneous reports and later summaries reflect that ruling officially. Her legacy is that of a multifaceted entertainer whose work is occasionally revisited by collectors of 1970s French pop.
