Overview: Zoltán Peskó (15 February 1937 – 31 March 2020) was a Hungarian conductor and composer whose career spanned several decades and countries. Born in Budapest, he built a reputation as an interpreter of both 20th-century repertoire and operatic works, combining practical musicianship with an interest in new music.

Education and early training

Peskó received his musical formation at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music and continued advanced studies with several prominent teachers. He worked with Italian pedagogues such as Goffredo Petrassi and Franco Ferrara and, during the 1960s, studied with the French composer and conductor Pierre Boulez while spending time in Switzerland. These influences informed his technical approach and his openness to modernist and contemporary idioms.

Career and positions

Early in his professional life Peskó served as an assistant conductor, including a period working under Lorin Maazel with the German Symphony Orchestra in Berlin. Over the years he held leadership and guest-conducting posts across Europe. One of his notable appointments was as chief conductor of the Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa, affiliated with the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon, where he led the ensemble between 2001 and 2004.

Repertoire, compositions and approach

Peskó was known for a repertoire that balanced classical and contemporary works. He championed living composers and brought twentieth-century scores into concert and operatic programmes alongside more established pieces. As a composer he produced works in a variety of forms; his compositional output was less widely recorded than his conducting, but it contributed to his overall profile as a musician attentive to modern trends.

Legacy and recognition

Throughout his life Peskó combined conducting with teaching and advocacy for contemporary music. His recordings and live performances were appreciated for clarity of texture and rhythmic precision. He influenced a generation of musicians through his interpretive choices and institutional leadership. Zoltán Peskó died on 31 March 2020 at the age of 83, leaving a body of work that reflects mid-to-late twentieth-century European musical currents and the cross‑border life of a working conductor.
