Zingem — former municipality in East Flanders, Belgium

Location and demographics

Zingem lies in the northwestern part of Belgium. It is located at roughly 50°54′ North, 3°39′ East and formed part of the network of towns and villages that make up East Flanders. In 2007 the population of Zingem was around 6,822 inhabitants, reflecting its character as a modestly sized local centre rather than a large urban area.

History and municipal reorganisation

The settlement developed over many centuries as part of the historic region of Flanders. Like many Belgian municipalities, Zingem experienced changes in local government structure during 20th- and 21st-century reforms. The most recent change was the 2019 merger with Kruishoutem to create Kruisem, an administrative measure intended to streamline services and governance.
