Overview

Zeeland (sometimes anglicized as Zealand) is a province in the southwest of the Netherlands. It comprises a network of islands, peninsulas and a coastal strip bordering the North Sea and Belgium. The provincial capital is Middelburg. Zeeland has a maritime character: fishing, shipping, ports and seaside tourism have long shaped its economy and identity. The population is about 385,000 (2021).

Geography and main places

Much of Zeeland lies at or below sea level and is made up of former islands separated by estuaries. The landscape mixes dunes, polders and tidal channels. Major parts include Walcheren, Zuid-Beveland, Noord-Beveland, Schouwen-Duiveland, Tholen and the mainland region Zeeuws-Vlaanderen.

  • Middelburt (capital): historic center and administrative seat.
  • Vlissingen and Terneuzen: important port towns and gateways to maritime trade.
  • Smaller towns and villages: many serve seasonal tourism and local agriculture.

History and land management

Zeeland's history is closely tied to the sea. Repeated floods shaped settlement patterns and prompted an extensive tradition of dike building and land reclamation. The catastrophic North Sea flood of 1953 led to the large-scale Delta Works, an engineering programme of dams, barriers and sluices designed to improve flood protection and water management.

Economy, culture and environment

The province combines agriculture and horticulture with port activities, shipbuilding and fisheries. Tourism is significant—beaches, cycling routes and estuary nature reserves draw visitors. Local culture includes Zeelandic dialects and culinary specialties based on seafood, especially mussels and oysters. Conservation of wetlands and careful coastal management remain priorities.

Zeeland should not be confused with the country of New Zealand, which was named by Dutch explorers after the Dutch province. For official information about the province and its administration see the provincial government pages and general resources on the Netherlands.
