Zebibyte (ZiB): the binary unit for extremely large digital quantities
A zebibyte (ZiB) is an IEC binary prefix unit equal to 2^70 bytes (1024 exbibytes). It describes extremely large storage capacities and is distinct from the decimal zettabyte (ZB).
Overview
A zebibyte, abbreviated ZiB, is a binary-based unit of digital information defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It represents 2^70 bytes and is commonly expressed as 1,024 exbibytes (exbibyte). One zebibyte is also one thousand twenty-fourth of a yobibyte (yobibyte).
Definition and characteristics
The zebibyte arises from the IEC series of binary prefixes that avoid ambiguity with decimal prefixes. Key characteristics include:
- Symbol: ZiB.
- Binary value: 2^70 bytes, built from successive 1,024-fold steps.
- Relation to neighbors: 1 ZiB = 1,024 exbibytes; 1 YiB (yobibyte) = 1,024 ZiB.
History and standardization
Binary prefixes such as kibi-, mebi-, gibi- and zebi- were standardized by the IEC in the late 1990s to provide unambiguous multiples of bytes based on powers of two. The zebibyte fits this scheme as the binary counterpart to the decimal zettabyte (ZB), which uses powers of ten.
Uses and practical importance
Practically, zebibytes are used when discussing storage or data volumes far beyond the scale of consumer devices: global cloud platforms, long-term archival systems, planetary-scale datasets, and future exascale or larger computing projects. Although seldom seen in everyday specifications today, ZiB helps technical communication about very large capacities without decimal ambiguity.
Distinctions and common confusions
People often confuse zebibyte (ZiB) with zettabyte (ZB). The zettabyte is a decimal unit (10^21 bytes) and is smaller than a zebibyte when measured in binary terms. Manufacturers and media sometimes mix decimal and binary terms; using IEC prefixes like zebibyte reduces that confusion. For more on adjacent units, see exbibyte (exbibyte) and yobibyte (yobibyte).
