Overview
Xinyang (信阳), sometimes romanized as Sinyang, is a prefecture-level city in southern Henan province in the People's Republic of China. The urban area lies near the south bank of the Huai River and serves as a regional administrative and economic center for the surrounding agricultural and mountainous districts. Official census figures recorded a population of 6,109,106 in 2010, reflecting its role as a populous inland city.
Geography and climate
Xinyang occupies a transitional zone between lowland river plain and the eastern extent of the Dabie Mountains. This mix of river valley and upland terrain produces varied scenery—river flats suitable for cultivation and forested hills that attract visitors. The climate is generally humid and influenced by the East Asian monsoon, giving the area warm, wet summers and cool, damp winters which support diverse crops and vegetation.
Economy and notable products
Agriculture remains important in Xinyang's economy. The city and its surrounding counties are best known for producing Xinyang Maojian, a high‑quality green tea prized across China for its fragrance and appearance. Other local activities include grain and oilseed farming, forestry in the mountain zones, and expanding light industry and service sectors in the urban districts. Transport connections by road and rail link Xinyang with larger provincial and national markets.
History and development
The area around present-day Xinyang has been settled for many centuries and has developed through successive Chinese dynasties as an inland administrative center. Over time it has evolved from a primarily rural hinterland into a prefecture-level city with growing urban infrastructure, educational institutions, and cultural facilities while retaining much of its agricultural base.
Culture, tourism, and distinctions
Xinyang combines agricultural tradition with natural tourism. Mountain resorts and scenic spots in the Dabie range draw visitors, and local tea culture is a prominent element of regional identity. Notable attractions associated with the city include mountain scenery, forested areas for hiking, and sites that reflect local history and folk customs. Xinyang's reputation for Xinyang Maojian tea and its location at the river–mountain junction are among its most frequently cited distinctions.
