Bernard "Bernie" Kilgariff (30 September 1923 – 13 April 2010) was an Australian politician known for his central role in Northern Territory politics. He was a founding member of the Country Liberal Party and represented Territory interests both in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly and later in the Australian Senate.
Early life and background
Kilgariff was born in Adelaide, South Australia, and later established his life in central Australia. His roots in the region informed his political outlook and his focus on issues affecting remote and regional communities. Throughout his career he was regarded as a prominent local figure who helped shape political organisation in the Territory.
Political career
In the early 1970s Kilgariff helped form a new political grouping intended to represent rural and territorial interests. He served as the member for Alice Springs in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly from 1974 to 1976. In 1975 he was elected to the Australian Senate as a representative for the Northern Territory and held that seat until 1987. During his time in public office he worked on matters affecting the Territory and its relationship with the federal government.
