Westerwolde (Low Saxon: Westerwoolde) is a municipality in the southeast of the Dutch province of Groningen, in the Netherlands. It occupies a predominantly rural area characterized by small villages, agricultural land and natural reserves. The municipal administration reports a population of roughly 25,000 residents spread across an area of about 281 km².
Geography and settlements
Westerwolde lies near the German border in a landscape of fields, heath and peat remnants. The municipality includes a number of villages and hamlets; the largest and principal settlement is Sellingen. The territory is relatively low in population density and offers networks of local roads and cycling routes that connect settlements and natural areas.
History and formation
The modern municipality of Westerwolde was created on 1 January 2018 through the merger of the former municipalities of Bellingwedde and Vlagtwedde. This reorganization was part of a wider trend of municipal consolidations in the Netherlands intended to improve local governance and service delivery for smaller communities.
Administration and demographics
Westerwolde is governed by a municipal council and an executive board headed by a mayor, following the standard Dutch local government model. The population is dispersed among numerous villages; settlements that gave their names to the former municipalities, such as Bellingwedde and Vlagtwedde, remain local centres for services. Demographically the area has an older age profile than many Dutch cities and retains a strong rural character.
Economy, nature and culture
The local economy is dominated by agriculture, small-scale industry and public services. Westerwolde is also valued for outdoor recreation: hiking, cycling and birdwatching are common activities in its woods, heathlands and along small waterways. The municipality contains protected nature areas and initiatives to conserve peatland and traditional landscapes, which attract regional visitors.
