Overview
West Sumbawa Regency is an administrative regency (Indonesian: Kabupaten) located on the western portion of Sumbawa Island. It lies within the Indonesian Province of West Nusa Tenggara. The regency seat is the town of Taliwang. As an administrative unit it is responsible for local services, development planning and management of natural and cultural resources.
Geography and environment
The regency covers coastal plains, low hills and offshore islets. Its shoreline features beaches, coral reefs and fishing grounds that support local livelihoods. Inland areas are used for agriculture and grazing. The climate is tropical with distinct wet and dry seasons, which influences cropping cycles and marine conditions.
History and administration
West Sumbawa was formed through administrative division of the larger Sumbawa area in the early 21st century to improve local governance and focus development efforts. The regency is subdivided into districts (kecamatan) and villages, each with elected and appointed officials. Local government is headed by a regent (bupati) and a district council responsible for regulation and budgeting.
Economy and society
The local economy is mixed: smallholder agriculture (such as rice, maize and coconuts), fisheries, forestry products and small trade predominate. There are also local enterprises and services centered in Taliwang. The population is primarily of Sumbawa ethnic background; the Sumbawa language and Indonesian are commonly used, and Islam is the main religion.
Tourism and notable features
The regency attracts visitors to its beaches, diving and traditional coastal villages. Tourism is growing alongside efforts to conserve reefs and coastal habitats. Key attractions are natural scenery, local markets and cultural events showcasing crafts and culinary specialties.
Transport and development
Road links connect towns within the regency and to neighboring parts of Sumbawa; ports support small-scale shipping and fishing. Development priorities include improving infrastructure, expanding sustainable tourism and managing marine and terrestrial resources to benefit local communities.
