Landscape and transportation

Wayne County combines small-city centers and broad agricultural areas. Low rolling hills, river valleys and farmland characterize much of the county. History and development

The county was settled in the early nineteenth century and developed with patterns typical of the Old Northwest: pioneer agriculture, Quaker and other religious communities, and later industrial growth in towns. In the nineteenth century canals and railroads fostered manufacturing and trade. Richmond became a cultural and transportation hub for the surrounding rural townships.
