Wallenried (French: Esserts) was a small former municipality located in the See (Lac) district of the canton of Fribourg, in Switzerland. The community was part of a bilingual border region where German and French cultural influences meet. On 1 January 2017 Wallenried merged with neighboring municipalities as part of a municipal consolidation.

Geography and administration

Situated within the See (Lac) district — the portion of Fribourg that lies around the lake sometimes known as Murtensee or Lac de Morat — Wallenried occupied a predominantly rural setting of farms, small residential areas and local roads connecting it to larger towns. Prior to 2017 it functioned as an independent municipal entity with responsibilities for local planning, basic services and community life.

History and merger

Wallenried maintained a local identity for many decades before administrative changes led to consolidation. Effective 1 January 2017 the former municipalities of Barberêche, Villarepos and Wallenried were incorporated into the larger municipality of Courtepin. The merger followed a broader trend in Switzerland toward reducing the number of small communes to improve service delivery, cost efficiency and regional planning.

Character and economy

Like many small communities in the region, Wallenried was characterized by mixed agriculture, local trades and commuter links to nearby urban centers. Cultural life typically centered on village institutions and seasonal traditions shared with neighboring hamlets. The bilingual setting influenced schools, signage and administrative practice.

Notable facts

  • The municipal merger into Courtepin aimed to centralize resources for services such as education, infrastructure and administration.
  • The See (Lac) district forms an area of cultural interchange between French- and German-speaking parts of the canton.

Today, historical references to Wallenried survive in local records, maps and the memory of residents, while governance and services are provided through the expanded municipality created by the 2017 consolidation.
