Wädenswil, often called "Wädi" or "Wädischwil" locally, is a lakeside municipality on the shore of Lake Zurich. It lies within the district of Horgen in the canton of Zurich and is part of Switzerland. The town combines residential, agricultural and educational roles and serves as a regional centre for surrounding communities.
Geography and transport
Positioned on the lake's western shore, Wädenswil benefits from direct road and rail links toward the city of Zurich and other lakeside towns. The lakefront, promenades and marinas are prominent features of the local landscape. Nearby hills and terraced slopes have long been used for orchards and vineyards, giving the town a mixed urban and rural character.
History and development
Historically Wädenswil grew from small agricultural settlements into a market town shaped by lake trade and later by 19th- and 20th-century transport improvements. Over time it added industrial and service sectors while preserving viticulture and horticulture traditions. The municipality expanded administratively when the neighbouring communities of Hütten and Schönenberg were merged into Wädenswil on 1 January 2019.
Economy, education and culture
Wädenswil has a diversified local economy: small industry, retail, and professional services coexist with agricultural pursuits such as fruit growing and wine production. It is also known for applied plant sciences and horticultural education, which attract students and professionals. Cultural life includes seasonal markets, lakeside festivals and local museums that reflect both rural and urban traditions.
