Geography and environment

History and name

The county was created in the late 19th century during the settlement of southeastern Colorado and is named for William Bent, a fur trader and frontier entrepreneur associated with trading posts in the Arkansas Valley. The area was historically occupied and traveled by Plains Indigenous peoples prior to Euro‑American settlement and later became part of the agricultural and transportation development of the Great Plains.
