Overview

"Vietnamese" is an adjective and demonym used for things associated with the country of Vietnam: its people, the principal language, and the range of cultural practices that developed in the region. In different contexts it may refer to a person from Vietnam, to the Vietnamese language, or to material and immaterial cultural expressions such as cuisine, dress, beliefs, and the arts.

Common meanings

  • People: individuals of Vietnamese nationality or descent, including communities within Vietnam and in the global diaspora.
  • Language: the Vietnamese language, used widely across the country as the national and official language.
  • Culture: traditions, festivals, culinary practices, religious and social customs, and artistic forms associated with Vietnam.

The Vietnamese language

Vietnamese belongs to the Austroasiatic language family and is tonal, meaning that pitch differences can change word meaning. It uses a Latin-based alphabet called chữ Quốc ngữ, which became dominant in modern times. The language typically follows a subject–verb–object order and uses particles and word order rather than extensive inflection to mark grammatical relationships. Vietnamese vocabulary shows layers of native words, Sino-Vietnamese compounds derived from historical contact with Chinese, and later borrowings from French and global languages.

Writing systems and history

Historically, Classical Chinese was used in administration and scholarship; chữ Nôm, a script that adapted Chinese characters to write vernacular Vietnamese, was also used for literature and popular texts. The Latin-based quốc ngữ script was developed and popularized during the colonial era and became the principal writing system for education, media, and government.

People, society, and culture

Vietnam is home to a majority group commonly called the Kinh and many recognized ethnic minority peoples with distinct languages and customs. Cultural life blends influences from Confucianism, Buddhism, Daoism, and indigenous beliefs. Family and community ties are social anchors. Prominent cultural elements include rice-centered cuisine, the áo dài garment, traditional music and performance forms such as water puppetry, and important festivals like the Lunar New Year.

Dialects and diaspora

Regional varieties of Vietnamese—often grouped as northern, central, and southern—differ in pronunciation, certain vocabulary, and intonation patterns. Large Vietnamese-speaking communities abroad maintain language and cultural practices while also adapting to new environments; these diaspora communities help transmit and transform aspects of Vietnamese heritage globally.

Contemporary role

Today Vietnamese functions as the language of government, education, and mass media in Vietnam. Cultural expressions continue to evolve, combining traditional forms with contemporary arts, cuisine innovations, and transnational influences. The term "Vietnamese" thus covers a diverse and dynamic set of identities and practices linked to the nation and its people.
