The District of Vevey was an administrative district in the Swiss canton of Vaud with its administrative centre in the city of Vevey. It comprised the lakeside communities and nearby villages that formed a local tier of government responsible for coordination between municipalities and the canton. The district's territory lay on the northern shore of Lake Geneva and included areas known for vineyards, promenades and small industrial and service centres.

Geography and composition

Situated within the canton of Vaud, the district occupied a segment of the lakeshore and adjoining foothills. Its municipalities varied in size from urban centres to rural villages and were linked by road and rail to the wider region. The district was one of several intermediate subdivisions used by the canton to administer justice, civil records and regional planning.

Role and functions

As an administrative entity, the District of Vevey served to implement cantonal policies at a local level, co‑ordinate services among constituent municipalities and manage certain judicial and electoral functions. District authorities typically handled tasks such as civil registry administration, local courts and some aspects of school and infrastructure planning in cooperation with the canton.

Economically and culturally the area was anchored by the city of Vevey, which hosted multinational companies and local industries, together with a range of cultural institutions and festivals that attract regional visitors. The lakeside setting and viticultural slopes contributed to tourism and a mixed economy combining services, light industry and agriculture.

Reorganisation and present status

In a cantonal reorganisation of districts, the former District of Vevey was consolidated into the larger Riviera–Pays‑d'Enhaut administrative district. Since 2008 its territory has been included within this new structure, changing the intermediate governance framework while the municipalities themselves retained local autonomy under the canton of Vaud and the Swiss federal state of Switzerland.

Quick facts and distinctions

  • Seat: the city of Vevey.
  • Former role: intermediate administrative division within Vaud.
  • Current status: part of Riviera–Pays‑d'Enhaut District since 2008.

The term "Vevey" therefore refers both to the historic district and to the principal municipality; when consulting legal or administrative materials it is important to distinguish between the municipal government of the city of Vevey and the now‑reorganized territorial label of the former district.
