Vellerat — former municipality in the canton of Jura, Switzerland
Vellerat was a small French-speaking former municipality in Delémont district, canton of Jura. It merged with Rebeuvelier into Courrendlin on 1 January 2019 as part of municipal consolidation.
Overview
Vellerat was a small rural municipality in the district of Delémont in the canton of Jura, in western Switzerland. The settlement lay amid the rolling pastures and mixed woodlands typical of the Jura plateau. The local population was predominantly French-speaking and the community exhibited the village-scale social structures common to the region: local associations, small farms and close ties with neighbouring localities.

The surrounding landscape is characteristic of the Jura: grazing meadows, hedgerows and patches of forest that support small-scale agriculture, forestry and a diverse rural environment. Vellerat was connected to nearby towns and services by local roads; residents generally relied on larger neighbouring municipalities for shops, schools and regional rail or bus links.
History and administrative change
When the Canton of Jura was created in 1979 it became administratively part of that new canton and the Delémont district. On 1 January 2019 the former municipalities of Rebeuvelier and Vellerat were merged into the municipality of Courrendlin. That reorganisation ended Vellerat's status as an independent municipality and placed local administration, planning and many public services under Courrendlin's municipal government.
Reasons and implications of the merger
Municipal mergers in Switzerland are often prompted by the desire to streamline administration, secure and improve public services, achieve economies of scale and strengthen financial viability. For residents these changes typically mean centralised services, shared infrastructure and representation within a larger municipal council, while the village itself often retains its local identity and landscape.
Culture and community life
Although small, the village maintained local traditions and community life through voluntary groups and events that reflect rural Jura culture. Heritage, agricultural practices and communal activities contribute to ongoing local identity even after the administrative merger.
