Vellerat — former municipality in the canton of Jura, Switzerland

Geography and land use

The surrounding landscape is characteristic of the Jura: grazing meadows, hedgerows and patches of forest that support small-scale agriculture, forestry and a diverse rural environment. Vellerat was connected to nearby towns and services by local roads; residents generally relied on larger neighbouring municipalities for shops, schools and regional rail or bus links.

History and administrative change

When the Canton of Jura was created in 1979 it became administratively part of that new canton and the Delémont district. On 1 January 2019 the former municipalities of Rebeuvelier and Vellerat were merged into the municipality of Courrendlin. That reorganisation ended Vellerat's status as an independent municipality and placed local administration, planning and many public services under Courrendlin's municipal government.
