Overview

Vaudeloges is a former commune in northwestern France. Historically part of the rural fabric of Normandy, it was administratively located in the Calvados department within the Basse-Normandie region. On 1 January 2017 the commune was merged into the new municipality of Saint-Pierre-en-Auge, as part of a national trend of consolidating small communes.

Geography and setting

Situated in the gentle countryside of the northwest of France, the locality around Vaudeloges features farmland, hedgerow-lined lanes and small wooded plots typical of the Normandy bocage. The landscape supports mixed agriculture and preserves a largely rural character despite administrative changes.

History and administrative development

The origins of Vaudeloges follow the pattern of many small Norman villages: gradual development around agricultural land and local parish structures. The commune existed as an independent municipal entity until the wave of communal mergers in the 2010s that encouraged the creation of larger, more sustainable municipal units. For further administrative details see the entry for the former commune of Vaudeloges.

Local features and economy

Vaudeloges and its surroundings offer examples of regional architecture and rural infrastructure. Typical local features include:

  • small parish churches or chapels;
  • traditional farmhouses and barns;
  • fields and pastures used for mixed farming.

Economic life has historically centered on agriculture, small-scale local services and connections with nearby market towns.

Demographics, governance and significance

Before the merger the commune was administered by a municipal council responsible for local services and planning. The 2017 incorporation into Saint-Pierre-en-Auge transferred local governance to the larger municipal structure, intended to improve public service delivery while retaining local identity through delegated representation.
