Overview

Valzeina was a small Swiss municipality located in the eastern canton of Graubünden. It belonged to the district of Prättigau/Davos and sat within the mountainous country of eastern Switzerland. Administratively it functioned as an independent local community until the start of 2011.

Geography and character

The settlement occupies a high valley setting typical of the region, with scattered hamlets, alpine meadows and often steep surrounding slopes. The local built environment reflected traditional alpine architecture, and the landscape supported pastoral agriculture, forested slopes and seasonal outdoor recreation rather than dense urban development. The spoken language in the area has been primarily German, consistent with much of the Prättigau valley.

History and administration

Historically Valzeina functioned as a small rural community with local governance and communal institutions. On 1 January 2011, the neighbouring municipality of Fanas and Valzeina were incorporated into the larger municipality of Grüsch. This type of municipal consolidation is common in Switzerland when small communes combine for administrative efficiency and shared services.

Economy, culture and uses

The local economy was centred on mountain farming, forestry and modest tourism activities such as hiking and nature appreciation. Cultural life in such villages typically revolves around local festivals, church calendars and community clubs. Visitors come for quiet countryside experiences rather than major tourist infrastructure.

Notable distinctions

  • Part of the Prättigau/Davos district, a corridor with a mix of tourism and agriculture: Prättigau region.
  • Located in the Swiss canton of Switzerland's Graubünden
  • Local administrative change: merger with Fanas into Grüsch.
