Václav Riedlbauch — Czech composer, educator and cultural manager

Career and positions

Riedlbauch held several prominent administrative posts. For many years he was program director at the Prague Congress Centre and from 2001 until his death he served as Director General of the Czech Philharmonic, a role in which he oversaw programming, international contacts and organizational affairs. He was also a professor at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, where he taught and mentored younger musicians and managers.

Musical work and teaching

Although best known for his leadership roles, Riedlbauch was an active composer. His output included works intended for concert performance as well as music for stage and media. As a teacher he combined compositional guidance with practical training in cultural management, helping bridge the worlds of artistic creation and institutional practice.

Public service

In 2009–2010 Riedlbauch was appointed Minister of Culture in the caretaker government led by Jan Fischer. In that temporary cabinet he carried responsibility for cultural policy and state support of the arts during a transitional political period. His ministerial tenure reflected his dual identity as both an artist and an administrator.

Legacy and death

Riedlbauch died in Prague on 3 November 2017 at the age of 70 from complications related to COPD. Colleagues remember him for strengthening institutional structures, promoting Czech musical life at home and abroad, and for his long service as an educator. His combination of creative work, teaching and management left a visible imprint on Czech cultural institutions and on generations of musicians and administrators.
