Tjejtrampet — Swedish women's road bicycle race (1990–2009)

The event combined competitive elite racing with elements open to recreational participants, so a single event could feature fast open-road competition alongside mass-start or fun-ride formats aimed at encouraging broader participation. Course layouts varied by year: some editions used a measured circuit within or around an urban area, while others adopted point-to-point routes that showcased local roads. Routes were typically chosen to balance safety, spectator access and sporting challenge.

History and development

Organised by local committees and cycling clubs in collaboration with municipal authorities and sponsors, Tjejtrampet began as a national-level competition and attracted regional entrants and occasional international starters. For many years it was held in and around Stockholm. In 2006 the organisers relocated the main race to Västerås, a move intended to refresh the event and tap local support in a different community. The race continued for a few more seasons before it ceased after the 2009 edition.

Participation and organisation

Local organising committees, aided by volunteers and local cycling clubs, managed road closures, timing and safety measures. Media coverage and municipal promotion varied by year, but the event was noted for its role in drawing women into organised cycling, offering both a competitive goal for elite riders and an accessible entry point for newcomers.

Significance and legacy

Although Tjejtrampet is no longer staged, it is remembered for increasing the visibility of women’s road cycling in Sweden during the 1990s and 2000s. The event provided a platform for national competitors and helped normalise dedicated women-only races at a time when there were fewer calendar opportunities.
