Taejong of Joseon (Yi Bang-won, 1367–1422)

Taejong, born Yi Bang-won, was the third king of Joseon (reigned 1400–1418). He strengthened royal authority through administrative and military reforms and was the father of King Sejong the Great.

Taejong of Joseon (born Yi Bang-won, 13 June 1367 – 30 May 1422) was the third monarch of the Joseon dynasty of Korea, ruling from 1400 to 1418. He assumed the throne after a period of intense factional conflict in the early years of Joseon and is remembered both for his often ruthless consolidation of power and for institution-building that stabilized the new dynasty.

Rise to power and background

Yi Bang-won was a prominent son of Joseon's founder, Yi Seong-gye (Taejo). During the dynasty's founding period he played a decisive role in military and political struggles that determined the succession and shaped the court. Those conflicts—commonly called the "Strife of Princes"—ended with Yi Bang-won emerging as the dominant figure and securing the throne as King Taejong.

Government and reforms

As king, Taejong focused on strengthening centralized royal authority. He reorganized central administration, reinforced the role of a merit-based bureaucracy, and reformed military institutions to reduce the influence of regional armed factions. Fiscal and legal measures under his reign aimed to create a more effective tax and land management system, and he established precedents for the Six Ministries model that structured Joseon's government for generations.

Abdication, later influence, and legacy

Taejong abdicated in 1418 in favor of his son King Sejong but continued to exercise considerable influence as a retired monarch. His policies curtailed aristocratic power and created conditions for relative stability and cultural development during the reign of his son, Sejong the Great. Historians note a dual legacy: his methods were severe, including the elimination of rivals, yet his actions consolidated the dynasty and enabled later achievements in governance, science, and the arts.
