Overview

Susanville is the county seat of Lassen County in northeastern California, sited along the Susan River. The community serves as a regional hub for government services, commerce and recreation for a largely rural area. Population estimates in the mid-2010s placed the city at around 14,800 residents; numbers can vary with local institutions and seasonal factors. For official information and services see the city or county pages: local resources.

History and name

The town began in the mid-19th century as a frontier settlement and was once known as Rooptown, a reference to an early settler. Its present name honors Susan Roop, a member of a pioneering local family. Over time Susanville developed as a service center for ranching, timber and miners in the surrounding valleys and mountains, and it became the county seat when Lassen County was organized.

Economy and employment

Susanville's economy has shifted across eras from agriculture and timber to a more service-oriented base with a large corrections sector. Several nearby correctional institutions have been important employers in the late 20th and early 21st centuries; they draw staff from the town and surrounding communities and influence local housing and services. Small businesses, county government, healthcare and education also contribute to local employment.

Facilities and community life

  • Local government offices and the county courthouse provide administrative functions for Lassen County.
  • Correctional and detention facilities in the region are a notable part of the local economy, including a federal institution and state prisons.
  • Community institutions include historical societies, parks and small museums that reflect frontier and ranching heritage.

Geography, recreation and notable facts

Susanville lies in a high-elevation valley near Honey Lake and the edge of the Sierra Nevada foothills, with the Susan River running through town. Outdoor recreation is readily accessible: fishing, hunting, hiking and nearby public lands and forests attract visitors and residents. The town is also a regional gateway for travelers heading to volcanic landscapes and mountain wilderness to the west and north. A distinct aspect of Susanville's modern identity is the economic and social role played by correctional institutions in a small rural community.
