Steffisburg is a municipality in the administrative district of Thun, within the canton of Bern in Switzerland. On 1 January 2020 the neighbouring municipality of Schwendibach was incorporated into Steffisburg, increasing its municipal territory and bringing additional rural hamlets into its administration.
Geography and layout
Located immediately adjacent to the city of Thun, Steffisburg occupies a position between urban centres and the foothills that rise toward the Bernese Oberland. The municipality contains a mix of residential neighbourhoods, industrial and commercial zones, agricultural land and wooded areas. Its location makes it part of the broader Thun functional area and links it to lakeside recreation and mountain access in the region.
History and development
Steffisburg has medieval roots and developed historically in the orbit of Thun, sharing economic and social ties with the nearby market town and castle. Over time it grew from a collection of villages and farms into a more continuous suburban municipality, shaped by improved transport and post‑industrial expansion. The recent amalgamation with Schwendibach reflects a trend of municipal consolidation seen elsewhere in Switzerland.
Government, services and community
The municipal government is responsible for local planning, schooling, social services and public utilities. Steffisburg operates primary and secondary schools, local sports and cultural facilities, and community programmes. Public participation in municipal affairs is typical of Swiss local government, with elected councils and regular votes on key issues.
- Key public services: education, waste collection, local planning
- Community amenities: sports halls, parks, cultural associations
- Recent change: integration of Schwendibach (2020) expanded municipal responsibilities
Economy, transport and connections
The local economy combines small and medium enterprises, retail services and light manufacturing, with many residents commuting to Thun or Bern for work. Steffisburg is linked to surrounding places by regional roadways and public transport networks—buses and regional rail services connect it with Thun and the wider canton. Its position near Thun and easy access to scenic areas supports local tourism and leisure activities.
Culture and notable features
Residents and visitors find a balance of village character and suburban convenience: village churches and traditional farmsteads sit alongside contemporary housing estates. Green spaces, hiking routes into the nearby hills and community festivals contribute to local life. As part of the Thun area, Steffisburg shares cultural ties with the Bernese Oberland while maintaining its own municipal identity.
