Special Achievement Award (Academy Awards)

Criteria and process

The Academy grants this award only when the Board of Governors or appropriate committee determines that a particular achievement rises to an extraordinary level and lacks a suitable competitive category. Unlike standard Oscars, Special Achievement Awards are typically not preceded by a multi-nominee ballot; the decision is made by Academy leadership and the recipient is announced and presented at the main ceremony. Awardees receive the same statuette given to winners in competitive categories.

History and development

The Special Achievement Award has been used throughout the Academy’s history to fill gaps between evolving filmmaking practices and the institution’s formal categories. As motion picture technology and craft have developed, the Academy has sometimes created new competitive categories (or adjusted existing ones), which has reduced—but not eliminated—the need for one-off special awards.

Relation to other Academy honors

This award differs from the Honorary Award (which often recognizes lifetime achievement or broad contributions), and from Scientific and Technical Awards (which recognize specific inventions or sustained technical contributions). The Special Achievement Award is focused on a particular, outstanding accomplishment associated with a specific film or production circumstance.
