Administratively, South Jakarta is divided into ten districts (kecamatan). These districts include:
- Kebayoran Baru
- Kebayoran Lama
- Setiabudi
- Cilandak
- Jagakarsa
- Pasar Minggu
- Pesanggrahan
- Mampang Prapatan
- Pancoran
- Tebet
Within these districts are well-known neighborhoods and micro-centers such as Pondok Indah, Kemang, SCBD (Sudirman Central Business District) in Setiabudi, and the planned residential area of Kebayoran Baru. Each area has its own character: some are principally residential and green, others are dense commercial corridors with offices, malls and nightlife.
History and development
South Jakarta grew as Jakarta expanded in the 20th century. Parts of it were developed as planned residential suburbs in the mid-1900s, notably Kebayoran Baru which was designed as a garden suburb. Over subsequent decades, urbanization and investment converted large tracts into mixed-use developments. In recent decades the city has seen the rise of high-rise office towers, shopping complexes and entertainment districts, alongside efforts to preserve parks and institutional green spaces.
Economy, culture and landmarks
The area is economically diverse: commercial districts and business parks concentrate finance, services and corporate offices, while other zones host boutiques, galleries, dining and nightlife that attract both residents and visitors. Cultural and recreational landmarks include the Ragunan Zoo in Pasar Minggu, several museums, major shopping centers such as those around Pondok Indah and SCBD, and parks used for leisure and community events. South Jakarta also hosts numerous international schools and diplomatic missions, contributing to its international character.
Transport, governance and notable facts
Transport links include major arterial roads, commuter rail services and connections to Jakarta’s mass rapid transit and toll road network, which ease access to central and greater Jakarta. As an administrative city within the capital region, South Jakarta does not function as an independent municipality in the same way as cities elsewhere in the country: its administrative head is appointed by the provincial government rather than elected. This governance model reflects the special status of Jakarta as the national capital.
Today South Jakarta remains an important part of Jakarta’s urban fabric, balancing residential neighborhoods and green spaces with dense commercial centers and cultural venues. Its variety of districts makes it a key area for housing, business, recreation and services within the capital region.
