Overview

Anthonius Hubertus "Bart" Carlier (23 June 1929 – 4 May 2017) was a professional footballer from the Netherlands who built much of his playing career in France. Born in 1929 in the Netherlands, Carlier became known for his contributions to French club football during the late 1950s and early 1960s and for representing his country at international level. He is remembered particularly for his role in AS Monaco's league triumphs of the early 1960s.

Club career

Carlier spent eight seasons playing in French competition, where he competed at the highest domestic level and helped his teams contend for honours. His most notable spell came with AS Monaco, a club with which he won French national championships in 1961 and 1963. During that period Monaco emerged as one of the stronger sides in the league, and Carlier's presence contributed to their sustained success.

International play

On the international stage Carlier appeared for the Dutch national side on five occasions, scoring two goals. Those appearances placed him among a smaller cohort of Dutch players who gained experience abroad in the mid-20th century, at a time when international transfers were less common than in later decades. Style and significance

Contemporaries and later observers noted that Carlier brought experience and composure to his teams. While specific match reports and statistics from the era are not always comprehensive, his involvement in championship-winning sides indicates he played at a competitive level and contributed to team play and results. He stood out as part of a generation of Dutch players who established careers beyond their home league.

Later life and legacy

After retiring from professional football Carlier lived in France. He died on 4 May 2017 in Strasbourg at the age of 87. His passing was noted by clubs and fans who remembered his role in AS Monaco's domestic titles. For regional context see Strasbourg and the broader French football environment here.
