The project covers general reference topics—history, geography, biographies, science, culture and current affairs—with particular strength in subjects relevant to Slovakia and Slovak speakers. Entries use the Latin script with Slovak diacritics. As with other language editions, quality varies from short stubs to in‑depth articles; the collection includes more than 120,000 articles in total, maintained and expanded by volunteers.

History and development

The Slovak Wikipedia began in the early 2000s as part of a wave of new language editions. Growth followed contributions from native speakers, students, academics and hobbyists. Over time the community developed local policies and guidelines adapted from broader Wikipedia norms to address language‑specific questions such as orthography, transliteration and handling of historically contested topics.

Community and governance

Operation relies on an active but relatively small volunteer community that performs editing, patrolling and administration. Like other editions, it uses elected and appointed roles—administrators, bureaucrats and stewards—and organizes tasks via talk pages and community portals. Projects and maintenance tasks are coordinated through informal groups and WikiProjects devoted to areas such as biographies, local history and geography.

The Slovak Wikipedia serves as an accessible reference for Slovak speakers at home and abroad, a starting point for research and a tool in education. It documents local culture, places and public figures often underrepresented in larger language editions. Challenges include coverage gaps, limited editor numbers, occasional vandalism and the ongoing need to improve article sourcing and neutrality.

Notable distinctions

• It exists alongside other Central European language editions; Slovak and Czech are mutually intelligible, yet each language maintains its own Wikipedia edition to reflect distinct linguistic norms.
