Overview

Šiauliai County is one of the ten counties that make up the Republic of Lithuania. Its administrative centre and largest urban area is the city of Šiauliai, which functions as the county's cultural and economic hub. Although the formal county administrations were abolished on 1 July 2010, the name and borders of Šiauliai County continue to be used for territorial, statistical and planning purposes.

Geography and subdivisions

The county occupies a varied landscape of agricultural plains, forests and small lakes in the north‑central part of the country. It includes a mix of urban and rural communities and is served by regional transport links that connect it to other parts of Lithuania and neighbouring countries.

  • Key municipalities include the city of Šiauliai and nearby district municipalities and towns.
  • Land use combines farming, woodland and pockets of industry around major towns.

History and administration

Counties in Lithuania were established in the 1990s as an intermediate level of administration. On 1 July 2010 the county administrations were dissolved and many responsibilities were transferred to national institutions and municipal governments. Despite that change, counties such as Šiauliai remain important units for statistical reporting, regional planning and certain state services (administrative structure references).

Economy, culture and services

The city of Šiauliai acts as an economic centre with manufacturing, services, education and cultural institutions concentrated there. The wider county supports agriculture, forestry and smaller industrial enterprises. Cultural life includes museums, theatres and higher education facilities that serve the region.

Notable features

Šiauliai County is associated with several cultural and tourist sites in northern Lithuania, and its central city is known as a regional transport and service node. The county's continued use in statistical and planning contexts preserves its role as a recognizable territorial unit even after the administrative reform of 2010.
