History and development

Shakargarh has a long regional history as part of the greater Punjab area. Before the 1947 partition of British India, the territory was administered within the old Gurdaspur-related jurisdictions; the mid-20th century boundary changes reorganised districts and tehsils and assigned Shakargarh to the modern administrative framework that eventually became Narowal District. Over decades the tehsil has evolved from a chiefly rural region into a district subdivision with basic civic institutions.
