Sergei Gimayev (1955–2017) — Soviet Ice Hockey Defenceman and Broadcaster

Early life and development

Gimayev came of age in the Soviet sports system, which placed strong emphasis on organized youth training and club development. Like many players of his generation, he progressed through local clubs and development programs that supplied talent to the Soviet Championship League (the league), the country’s premier domestic competition at the time.

Playing career

Gimayev played as a defenceman and spent ten seasons at the top level of Soviet club hockey, roughly between 1976 and 1986.
