Secqueville-en-Bessin was a small rural commune in the historic Bessin area of the Calvados department. The locality appears in administrative records under the name Secqueville-en-Bessin and is traditionally associated with the former region of Basse-Normandie. Administratively it belonged to the department of Calvados in northwest France. On 1 January 2016 the commune was merged into the nearby municipality of Rots, reflecting a nationwide trend of combining small communes to share services and governance.

Location and landscape

The village occupies a typical Normandy setting of mixed farmland, hedgerows and small woodland patches within the Bessin region. The landscape is characterized by pastoral fields, traditional farm buildings and a compact village core. Secqueville-en-Bessin is commonly described in relation to regional centres such as Caen and Bayeux, which are the principal urban points for administration, markets and transport in the area.

History and heritage

Like many villages in Normandy, Secqueville-en-Bessin has roots in the medieval settlement pattern of the region; its identity has been shaped by centuries of rural life. The wider Bessin and Calvados area bear traces of major historical events, and the 20th century in particular brought wartime activity and later reconstruction to parts of the department. The village retains vernacular architecture and often a parish church or village hall that serve as local landmarks.

Administration and community

The 2016 merger into Rots placed the former commune within a larger municipal structure intended to coordinate services such as planning, schools and local amenities. This change preserved the place name Secqueville-en-Bessin while integrating administration with neighboring settlements. References to the area remain in departmental records for Calvados and regional descriptions of Basse-Normandie.

Economy and visitors

The local economy is predominantly agricultural, with farms producing crops and livestock typical of Normandy. The village contributes to the rural character that attracts visitors interested in country walks, heritage sites and the history of the Bessin shore. Its location in northwest France makes Secqueville-en-Bessin a quiet base for exploring nearby historic towns and coastal landmarks.
