Geography and climate

Seaside occupies relatively flat coastal terrain with dunes and wetlands near the shoreline. The city experiences a cool Mediterranean climate moderated by the Pacific Ocean, with mild, wet winters and cool, often foggy summers. Natural features include coastal bluff trails, sandy beach areas, and pockets of restored native habitat on former military lands.

History and development

The area now called Seaside has a longer human history that includes the Indigenous peoples of the Monterey region before European contact. During Spanish and Mexican periods the region was organized into ranchos, and the settlement later became known as East Monterey. In the 20th century the nearby Fort Ord shaped the local economy and population. After base closure in the early 1990s much of the former military property was converted for public uses, including higher education, conservation, and recreation. Federal and state actions also protected portions of the former base as public open space.

Community, economy, and institutions

Seaside's economy is a mix of local services, retail, light industry, and institutions that serve residents, military families and students. The presence of a university campus and community college offerings on or near former base lands has contributed to a younger segment of the population and to workforce training. The city emphasizes affordable housing, neighborhood services, and diverse cultural events. Local government agencies coordinate redevelopment, environmental restoration, and parks management.
