Geography and landscape

The region lies mainly in the Vrbas river basin and is characterized by a mix of river valleys, rolling hills and forested uplands at the edge of the Dinaric mountain system. The Vrbas River is a defining natural feature, providing routes for transport and opportunities for recreation. The climate is transitional between continental and sub-Mediterranean patterns, with warm summers and cold winters.

Administratively the area includes the city of Banja Luka and a number of surrounding municipalities and towns. Population estimates for the wider region run into the hundreds of thousands; recent counts place the population at about 709,000, making it one of the more populous regions of Republika Srpska.
