Sascha Pohflepp (1978–2019): artist, designer and writer

Themes and approach

Pohflepp operated at the intersection of critical design, research art and speculative futures. Rather than producing strictly documentary or purely fictional artefacts, his projects often took the form of carefully researched prototypes, visual narratives or staged objects that suggest alternative technological pathways. He repeatedly addressed themes such as the agency of nonhuman systems, the political economy of emergent technologies, and the ethical and aesthetic implications of biological and computational design.

Notable works

• Growth Assembly (2009, with Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg; illustrations by Sion Ap Tomos) — a speculative project imagining biological processes repurposed to grow everyday objects; it prompted reflection on industrial production, synthetic biology and material culture.
• Spacewalk (2017) — a film and installation exploring human presence, perception and technological mediation in outer-space contexts, using staging and visual research to question narratives of exploration and embodiment.
• Deep Unlearning (I) (2018, with Chris Woebken) — an investigative project engaging machine-learning methods and environmental data, interrogating how automated systems learn to see and classify the world and how those processes shape decision-making.
• Those Who (2019) — among his later works, continuing his interest in memory, loss and the overlapping registers of technological and natural histories.

Practice, collaborations and exhibitions

Pohflepp frequently collaborated with biologists, software engineers, designers and artists, emphasising interdisciplinary exchange and laboratory-informed research. His projects were shown in galleries, festivals and academic contexts internationally, and were discussed in communities concerned with design research, bioart and the cultural implications of emerging technologies. He used exhibition formats to stage conversations about responsibility, governance and the imaginaries that inform technological development.

Legacy

His work is often cited as an example of how speculative design can make complex technical possibilities legible to broader publics and encourage deliberation about technological choices. Although he died in June 2019 — his death was publicly announced on 25 June 2019 — his projects remain relevant to designers, artists and scholars who examine the socio-ecological stakes of computation, biotechnology and planetary futures.
