Overview

Sargodha District is an administrative district in the Punjab province of Pakistan. The city of Sargodha serves as the district headquarters and largest urban center. The district occupies part of the fertile plains of central Punjab and functions as an agricultural, educational and logistical hub for the surrounding rural area.

Geography and administration

The district lies in central Punjab and benefits from extensive canal irrigation and alluvial soils, which support a variety of crops. Administratively it is divided into several tehsils and local councils; principal subdivisions include:

  • Sargodha Tehsil
  • Bhalwal Tehsil
  • Kot Momin Tehsil
  • Shahpur Tehsil

Economy and land use

Agriculture dominates the local economy. Sargodha District is especially well known for citrus production—kinnow orchards are widespread—alongside wheat, sugarcane and other staple crops. Seasonal markets, fruit packing and related agribusinesses are important sources of employment.

Institutions, transport and culture

The district hosts major institutions such as the University of Sargodha and significant military installations, including an airbase that contributes to the region's strategic profile. Road and rail links connect the district to other parts of Punjab and Pakistan, facilitating trade and movement.

History and society

Historically the area has long been settled and developed through canal colonization and twentieth-century administrative changes. The population is predominantly Punjabi-speaking with Urdu widely used; cultural life combines rural traditions and urban services.
