Saint-Julien-de-Mailloc was a small rural commune in the Calvados department of northwestern France. It is commonly referenced in administrative records and local histories as a distinct village community until its merger into the larger commune of Valorbiquet on 1 January 2016. For a general overview see the local entry Saint-Julien-de-Mailloc.

Location and administrative context

The village lay within the historical region known as Basse-Normandie, an area that was combined with Haute-Normandie during a national territorial reorganisation to form the modern region of Normandy. Administratively it belonged to the Calvados department, one of France's departments along the Manche coast and inland agricultural zones. Its national context is the northwest of France.

History and merger

Like many small communes in France, Saint-Julien-de-Mailloc had a long history as an independent municipal entity centered on local agriculture and parish life. Faced with administrative and economic pressures, it took part in a communal consolidation process and was merged into the newly created commune of Valorbiquet on 1 January 2016. This consolidation followed wider trends aiming to pool resources and improve local services.

Characteristics and local features

The settlement exemplified the characteristics of small Norman villages: a compact village core, surrounding farmland, and local lanes connecting to nearby towns. Notable local features typically include a parish church, traditional houses, and remnants of agricultural buildings. Typical points of interest for visitors or researchers are:

  • community buildings and the village church;
  • landscape of mixed pasture and cereal fields;
  • local road links to nearby communes and markets.

After the merger, many administrative functions and communal services were reorganised under the Valorbiquet municipal structure, while local identity and heritage continue to be recognised by residents and regional records.
